    Interesting concept! I occasionally highlight a local business or entrepreneurial effort on my blog as a way to spread the word–and I’ve heard from a few readers that my blog is the first place they’ve found out about these efforts/businesses.

    It’s not that the businesspeople don’t advertise/post fliers, etc., but often times entrepreneurs are so busy trying to get their business up and running that they don’t have time and money to invest in a strategic media effort.

    This also seems like another great way for communities to capitalize on what they have. So many communities seem to focus on bringing outsiders in, but showcasing what’s already there can serve the dual purpose of strengthening the local economy and making the community more attractive to potential residents and businesses.

    Now, let me ask a question: Do you think this is the type of project a group of community volunteers could pull off with a little assistance?

    Mike–

    Sorry for the late response! Things have been a bit hectic getting summer crops in the ground (and protecting them from critters).

    However, I’m glad I waited a bit–because I think that a project like this can tie into the branding discussion, too!

    I do think this is the kind of project that community volunteers could pull off with some assistance, but I also think that group of volunteers has to be diverse enough in order to be able to identify different facets of the entrepreneurial efforts in the community.

    I wonder if it’s also something that could be accomplished in a media/journalism course (do they still have such courses?) on a high school level if the school had faculty savvy in this area. That ties in young people and what they see as valuable/cool/attractive about a community (the promotion of which could attract more young people to the community).

    Identifying these entrepreneurial efforts is also a way to help in a homegrown branding process (I am also of the opinion that spending $80+ thousand on an outside “consultant” is not the way to go). Not only can you get a sense of the character of the community by the entrepreneurs who are chosen for the interviews, you could also work into those interviews questions about their reasons for choosing the specific community they live in.
