Cameron Herold made the statement during a TEDx Edmonton presentation back in March 2010. Herold, a serial entrepreneur turned business coach, goes on in the presentation to say that he believes young people are capable of solving all the world's problems if adults would only help them embrace entrepreneurial thinking.
What skills do kids need to be entrepreneurs?
Towards the end of his presentation, Herold identifies the skills sets of entrepreneurs that he thinks need to be taught in schools. I took a screen shot from the video and have embedded his list below.

It's a great list because these are skills that can be taught across all academic disciplines - not just in business class.
For instance, I think that any high school English class could include a unit on "personal branding." Students could learn to be creative and position their personal assets while improving their writing skills. And to top it off, students could use what they learn about branding regardless of what career path they choose.

I used this quote by Sir Ken Robinson on a previous post, and I feel it fits right in here as well: “Creativity is as important in education as literacy.”
Somewhere between age 5 and 16 the majority of us lose our ability to think, draw, and act creatively. I think something in us becomes too afraid to fail and we stop being creative when no one tries to draw it out of us. Once we reach middle school, teachers ask for more concrete answers to more concrete questions. Ask a 5 year old to draw a horse, and they go for it; ask a coworker to draw a horse and they will probably refuse. They don’t want to draw it wrong, so they would rather not draw it at all, myself included.
We need to teach children, and each other, that creativity isn’t about drawing that horse right or wrong, but the value is in the process of reaching beyond your boundaries and seeing what you come up with.

Morgan was so kind as to do a write up on our son who has started his own marshmallows business. I would have to agree that it does take a little bit of risk and a lot of time. But if you give them the support and assistance they need to pursue something they are excited about it can have big rewards. Our son started by selling marshmallows at our parties but after that first $20 he was ready for more. We encouraged him to think of some places that might want to sell them and took him around to give away samples and ask for some business. A coffee shop offered to buy a few bags around Thanksgiving. Later in the spring she told us that she only planned on buying those first few bags but the way it happened is that between Thanksgiving and Christmas she sold over 100 bags! Since we got his website up we have shipped bags to PA, IL, TN, AL & SD. And to locations all over Kentucky, where we live. One of our first rules of business was that when Canaan no longer wanted to put in the work we would no longer make marshmallows. I am happy to say that he is still just as excited as he was on the first batch.

Mike, Canaan’s story is such an inspiration for other future entrepreneurs, and his marshmallows are absolutely delicious! It’s amazing what one can do, no matter how young or old, with a big dose of enthusiasm and drive.

This week I’m reading The Element, by Sir Ken Robinson. It’s about finding that thing in your life that makes you happy. Truth is, many of us (infact most of us) work our way through life not really knowing what we are supposed to be doing. Most of us are bored in our jobs but stick with them due to financial constrictions (usually put in place by ourselves lol), but it doesn’t always have to be that way.
