I wasn’t sure what town it was, but I figured something was up when I couldn’t link to “Ellis” in Wikipedia.

Hi,
the convention in this type of research is to give the town a and people peudonyms. If you are knowledgeable and/or familiar with the place it is often easy to find out. We have altered some details in the photos in the trailer but if you all have some suggestions to improve this we would certainly welcome them.
Best,
PJC

I suppose I am one of the “brains” who has left a place like “Ellis.” I now teach at a university. I love my hometown and am proud of the hard work the community has done to keep young families: new library, theater, and pool. Next year though, one of the towns major employers will be transferring it’s production to Mexico.

B Ramirez,
I hear you. Although I’m not from an “Ellis” (my rural hometown has become a suburb), I have lived, taught, and worked for the future of towns like Ellis for most of my adult life.
As I read Carr and Kafalas’s book (I’m only about 1/3 of the way through it), it reaffirms something I’ve always felt: Rural leaders need to understand that “it is people’s actions that ultimately determine whether a place hollows out.” (p. xiv)
Rural residents have the ability to overcome the plant closings, and can do something about the number of young people who leave.
And I think that stretches beyond the geographic borders of the rural communities. Even if people who leave never set foot in their hometowns again, I think they can positively impact that community’s future. I’m especially interested in how we can use social media to help. Let me know if you have any ideas.

I lived in Ellis. For the first 18 years of my life; before moving to Iowa City for college. I did not return to live in Ellis (other than visits) after moving for college and not since graduating from Iowa in 1986. I’ve seen towns near Ellis literally disappear. Perhaps in 10 years, with the continued penetration of technology and the ability to “in-source” really talented people anywhere they live, small towns will once again return to a more permanent status. Makes me consider moving my own company back there.

I agree. Rural communities, however, have to develop a strategy that makes it possible for this to happen. Have you ever thought about helping Ellis get ready for this type of economic development strategy? You may not live there today (and maybe never will), but I bet you could help them develop this type of strategy.
