As I began reading this article, I could almost taste it’s ending…As a newcomer to Clear Lake, I can definitely see why the jobs are there and the people to fill them, aren’t. Pay rate is the main factor these industries are struggling to fill positions. However, I believe, the desirability of the area is also something companies need to consider when looking to hire. Access to restaurants, shopping, quality health and child care, and recreation are very important. Good schools with qualified teachers, progressive curriculum, and high-quality athletics are also crucial. All of these are possible with better wages. Think about this…If a person with or without a family had a choice to live and/or work in Watertown or Sioux Falls versus Clear Lake, which would be more desirable and why? There is a reason these cities are growing and Deuel County is not. Although the cost of living may be somewhat higher in Watertown and Sioux Falls, there still exists a large difference in salaries compared to Clear Lake. Businesses need to become more involved in the community, if they expect to attract quality workers. Increasing pay rates for current employees and offering higher wages to potential employees would payoff with increased productivity, profits, and people.
