What’s the draw to your campground?

On Wednesday of last week, I had a chance to attend the Midstates Community and Economic Development Conference in Sioux City. What I like best about the conference is that attendees hear about unique projects from across Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. For instance, out of the chute in the morning, Joe Johnson from South Sioux City describe what they have done to make their city-owned campground successful. Joe is the assistant city administrator in South Sioux City, and they own a campground on the shores of the Missouri River. In addition to drawing people to the community, the campground is a success story in that it makes money! In his presentation, Joe offered great advice for making a municipally owned campground successful. If your community is looking for some advice, I’d recommend contacting Joe. (South Sioux City website) What I thought was most unique about his presentation were some innovative cabins that were produced through a partnership between the city and Iowa State University. In a nutshell, architect students design innovative cabins which are then built in the campground. (check out Slide 7 of Joe's presentation) I caught Joe after the event and asked him to explain the project, which I’ve captured in this short video.

(embed video) I really like the idea of small towns having campgrounds, but I often find that they lack the amenities and unique features to attract visitors. As Joe explained, the cabins serve as a draw to campground. If your community has a campground or is looking to develop one, I’d recommend contacting Joe for some advice. But I’d also suggest that you think about developing some unique features like the cabins in South Sioux City. You might be surprised by the number of people who come just to experience something different.

What I like

What first caught my attention about Studio H was not its focus on cool design. It was about place-based education and engaging young people within a rural community.

I've been a fan of place-based education since being introduced to it by Paul Theobald's book Teaching the Commons, cod online Clonazepam, Clonazepam trusted pharmacy reviews, back in the mid-1990s. Place-based education seeks to connect the educational process to the communities in which students live. It often embodies a more hands-on approach to education that takes students out of the classroom and into the world around them, enabling students to address real-life issues. I started reading her book and it all became clear.
